Abruzzenhund
AKA: Maremma Sheepdog, Abruzzese Shepherd Dog
Description: The Abruzzenhund is a weighty breed, attractive-looking dog with a head like that of a bear. Have strong jaws in scissors bite. Their har is compact that grows in whorls. Nose is black and becomes a little pinkish brown as they grow old. Usually their coat is in plain black but others are russet brown and grey markings. Their ears are small,v-shaped and pointed. The eyes are not that large but has a cheerful and smart expression, The nasal canal is straight. It is important to pluck their coat. Usually done by trimming them. Hair should not be clipped since it will ruin the coat for years. At times,hair grow in the corners of their eyes that should be taken care of to prevent irritation. The deep, rounded ribcage expand through the elbows. The long, harsh, and very thick hair is in slight wave. The under-coat is also compact.
Temperament: This is a friendly and rightly balanced flock guardian breed. They are very dedicated and brave, They will fight for protection. Thus, this makes them a vey detemined and excellent guard dog even without any continues barking. Most known as an loving and independent dog. This breed is not a dog that will follow every command by its owner unless they could see the point in it. They are very intelligent thus, education and training require mutual respect in handling and voice, and should be consistent. They are friendly to other dogs. and can be slightly aloof with strangers. This breed takes control over its flock and human family. As a pet, they are not very attached or even outgoing. It will defend both house and master, and is very attentive with children. The Maremma is a marvelous sheepdog and loves its work. They are the number one enemy of the wolf, but tame with man. Resistant to both cold and brambles. They are an excellent companion dog too. The Maremma is a friendly and a down-to -earth flock guardian. It is correctly described as affectionate but not dependent.
Activity: A daily walk and exercise is needed for them to gain more energy. and when it gets enough exercise, they would demand for freedom and space to run freely.
Grooming: An extra care is needed when the dog is shedding. Also,they need to be combed and brushed very well to remove all dead hair.
Health Problems: With such a small genetic pool, health problems such as inversion of the eyelids (entropion) can develop. Life span is 12-15 yrs.
