Bohemian Terrier

AKA: Czesky Terrier, Cesky Terrier

Bohemian TerrierDescription: The Bohemian Terrier is a moderately long dog with a robust body and short legs. It has a long head with a bushy beard, a mustache, and bushy eyebrows. The eyes are brown for the gray-blue dog and yellow for the brown one. The blue-gray dog has black nose and lips while the brown dog has liver ones. The ears are triangular, and folds close to the head. The tail is 7-8 inches long, undocked, and carried horizontally when the Bohemian Terrier gets excited.

Dynamics: The Bohemian Terrier is calm but playful dog. It is sweet and affectionate, and is excellent with children. This is also a loyal and protective breed, only fairly friendly with strangers but still attentive.

The Bohemian Terrier is easy to train. It is very important to socialize it since puppyhood for it to get along very well with people and other dogs and animals. Despite times when it becomes stubborn and feisty, the Bohemian Terrier is an excellent companion dog.

Color: The Bohemian Terrier comes in various shades of gray-blue (with tan, gray, white, or yellow markings) or light coffee brown. Puppies are born black though, and the coat lightens only when the dog is two years old. The skin pigment is gray for the blue-gray dog and flesh-colored for the brown one.

Country of Origin: The Bohemian Terrier comes from the Czech Republic, bred by Frantisek Horak. This breed was only recognized back in 1963.

Grooming: Regular trimming is needed in grooming the Bohemian Terrier. Long hair on the stomach, legs, and around the face is left alone. Clip the hair with electric clippers. Its long hair has to be brushed and combed at least twice a week. Clip away excess hair from the pads of the feet and in the ear passages.

Activities: The Bohemian Terrier is a very active breed. It enjoys running and playing. It has an average demand for exercise. Aside from being a great companion dog, this breed is also used for hunting, tracking, and as a watch and guard dog.

Other Info: The Bohemian Terrier has a life expectancy of 12-15 years. It is a generally healthy breed, although it is prone to Scottie Cramp (a minor condition causing awkward movement). The Bohemian Terrier will be fine in an apartment as long as it is taken outdoors from time to time.

Canaan Dog

AKA: Kelef K’naani

canaanDescription: This breed an herding and flock guardian dog. Also a very loyal breed, with medium sized square shaped strong body, with moderately deep chest. They are of moderate substance which combines its agility, endurance and strength. Their head is shaped like a blunt wedge that is shallow, nose is a bit slanted and dark. They have an almond shaped eyes,dark brown in color that also goes with its color & obliquely set with black rims. Ears are erect & medium in size. Canaan jaws are perfectly strong with complete scissor bite also their neck is muscular too, medium in length and well arched with muscular well laid shoulder, medium boned. They have strong, cat like feet and the tail is curled over its back especially when feel excited or happy. The first four imports in US comes in white with black mask and patches now its subsequent imports comes in a variety of color patterns.

Temperament: This breed is very intelligent, dependent and obedient dog. They positively respond to their trainings but should also give them time to rest since they could also get bored to repetitive trainings. They are outstanding at agility& tracking and could always think independently. They are a very loyal breed to their owners. Also, vigilant and confident. They are very alert & protective but also lively. They could be too aggressive to their same gender dogs and are a one family dog, defensive on their territory. It is recommended to be socialized to other dogs and to other people as well while still on their puppy hood days so they would not be aloof and could be wary to strangers except to those he could recognize. That is why early socialization is needed to this kind of breed for them to be able to determine strangers from people he knows.

Activity: They could live in an apartment provided he must get enough exercise daily. They enjoy playing outdoors, an average sized yard would be best for them. Their dense undercoat serves as protection from extreme temperatures may it during summer or winter season. Long daily walk and jog is required for them because they are a working dog so sitting around could not do good for them. They needed full amount of exercise, both mental and physical activities.

Grooming: This breed is easy to groom because they have short hair and no doggie odor. They are very clean. They only require once a week of brushing and combing. Extra care is needed only when they are shedding, only seasonal for Canaan breed.
Health Problems: This breed is very healthy with only one lowest rate of having a hip dysplasia compared to any other breeds. Their life expectancy is from 12-15 years.

- Canaan dogs are loyal breed, calm that could be a house dog. Very intelligent and alert and could also become friendly if they are being socialized to other people other than its owner also to other dogs.

Cairnoodle

cairnoodleAKA: Cairn-Poo

Description: This is not a pure breed dog they are crossed between Cairn Terrier and Poodle. They are an agile and high spirited. Since they are a mixed breed, their looks is also a combination of the two breeds like their coat which is somewhat curly and others are slightly wavy, very thin and short all over their body and coat is longer on their face. They show a hardy appearance with dark and large eyes and broad head.

Temperament: This cross bred is loyal and friendly, also affectionate. They acquired the boldness of a terrier as well as the sensitivity of a poodle but others are a mix of both traits. They are also very sociable especially with children and other non-canine pets. But they its not good for them to be left alone for a longer period of time because they demand full attention. Moreover, They should be engaged in a lot of activities to lessen or avoid making them feel bored and lonely so they wouldn’t become destructive. Another is that they are an alert dog, they bark when there are some suspicious strangers.

Activity: They could live in an apartment should be exercised like playing in a secured open yard and also a secured leash when taken to a walk. In indoors, they should have a safe toys for them to enjoy their play.

Grooming: They should be bathed regulary with a mild shampoo and be brushed a lot of times in a week to make them feel good and to prevent tangle and matting. Dental hygiene is also important for them to protect their teeth from early loss.

Health Problems: They are prone to such health issues as PRA, luxating patella, heart problems, portal shunt, and CMO.

Bohemian Shepherd

Bohemian ShepherdDescription: The Bohemian Shepherd is a medium-sized dog with long thick fur and rich undercoat. Its body is longer than it is tall, and has a great build. It is compact and well-proportioned. Its ears stand erect and pointed, highly set on its head. This breed has a fluid gait, light and patient.

Dynamics: The Bohemian Shepherd is a patient yet active dog. It is not aggressive and can be easily trained. It has a patient temperament and gets along well with children and other dogs and pets. It is not prone to any unstable behavior. It is friendly and devoted to its family and children but is reserved with strangers.

The Bohemian Shepherd makes a great watch dog and companion dog. It has an excellent nose, is agile and is very obedient. It also excels as a guide dog and is excellent in working alongside handicapped people.

Color: The Bohemian Shepherd’s coat color is black and tan.

Country of Origin: The Bohemian Shepherd originates in the Czech Republic. It has been known to exist there since the 1300s and has been professionally bred since the 1500s.

Grooming: The Bohemian Shepherd is easy to groom despite its long hair. Occasional brushing is enough. Like any other shepherd dog, it udnergoes normal shedding in the summer.

Activities: The Bohemian Shepherd is very active, hardworking, and loves a great challenge. This breed is used for herding, search and rescue, service-training, agility, and sledding. It is also an excellent watch and guard dog, as well as a patient companion dog.

Other Info: The Bohemian Shepherd can live indoors and outdoors. What is important is that it can connect with the people it is with since this breed is people-oriented.

Boerboel

AKA: African Boerboel, South African Boerboel, South African Mastiff

BoerboelDescription: The Boerboel is a big, muscular, and well-balanced working dog. This breed is impressive and intimidating in appearance. Its head is short, square, and muscular, with well filled cheeks. The top is broad and flat. The face can be with or without a black mask. There is a visible stop and the muzzle is black. The nostrils are large and widely spaced. The nasal bone is straight and parallel to the top-line head, tapering slightly to the front. The jaws are strong, narrowing slightly to the front and forming a scissors bite. The eyes are a dark brown and the ears hang down in a V shape (except when they are alert and the ears form a straight line with the top of the head).

The Boerboel has a muscular neck with a loose skin under the throat. The top line of its body is straight. The tail is short and is attached high to the body. The hind paws are slightly smaller than the front paws; both are round with dark curved toenails. The Boerboel’s skin is thick and there are moderate wrinkles on the forehead when it’s alert.

Dynamics: The Boerboel is an intelligent dog and a reliable watch and guard dog. It is fearless and at the same time obedient to its owners. It is also playful and affectionate. It gets along well with children. It loves a game of fetch and it revels in the attention it gets.

This breed makes a good guardian for the family. It is a natural protector and may get suspicious of any strangers coming near. It will accept visitors as guests only when it has confirmed that it is a friend. The Boerboel also gets along well with other dogs and pets.

Height: males 25-28 inches (64-70 cm), females 23-25.5 inches (59-65 cm)

Color: The Boerboel’s coat comes in cream white, pale tawny, reddish brown, brown, and all shades of brindle.

Country of Origin: The Boerboel originated in South Africa, where it was bred from the Bulldog and Mastiff type of dogs, and with the Hottentots. It was also crossed with the English long-legged Bulldog and the Bull Mastiff.

Grooming: In grooming the Boerboel, an occasional brushing is enough. Bathe it once a month. This breed is not suitable for an apartment life and needs an large area where they can run and play.

Activities: The Boerboel loves a lot of good exercise and play sessions.
